Learning Disabilities & Math

Published by Gail at 4:59 pm under Orlando Math Tutoring

Nearly 15 million children, teens and adults in the U.S. are diagnosed with some sort of learning disability. And while disorders that affect reading—such as Dyslexia—are commonly discussed, fewer news articles and forums seem to zero in on learning disabilities as they relate to math.

It’s known as “Dyscalculia,” which refers to the wide range of learning difficulties involving math skills. The National Center for Learning Disabilities notes that there is no single form of Dyscalculia, and difficulties vary from person to person and can change throughout a lifetime.

Students affected often possess visual-spatial difficulties, which result in a person having trouble processing what the eye sees, or language processing difficulty, which results in a person having trouble processing and making sense of what the ear hears. Both can affect math skills.

While there may be an extra hurdle to jump, mastering math can still be accomplished with Dyscalculia. The trick is to use alternate learning methods. Learn more at NCLD.
